I remember thinking while watching the show that Jim had massive main character privilege. He gets two different love interest, gets the promotion, and avoids some slapstick, mainly due to him being the character the audience is meant to root for. But I feel like Jim's likeably is anchored by the fact that he is surrounded by cartoon characters. In isolation, Jim isn't that great of a guy.

That was my thoughts on my second time around watching it. Especially after growing up and getting married, both Jim and Pam are ridiculous self interest fantasy’s. Both are implied to have the purest intentions despite making ludicrous mistakes of judgement. Jim is “just smart and great with people” until he isn’t, and becomes awkward and shy for no reason. Pam is framed as a brave come back story despite never putting in any effort to anything she does. Most of her development is handed to her, or just happens because. And anyone opposing the two of them is made out to be cartoonishly mustache twirling evil, so there is no debate on who is morally right.
