Got a BS and MS in arch and am sitting comfy in an awesome permanent fed job in Alaska. (Please don’t fire me Donnie). The graduate degree is key. That, and you really have to be a go getter to be successful in the field.
An arch simulator would probably be pretty boring. The type of games that doing my work make me think of are survival or colony sims. I think the hunter gatherer, seasonal round lifestyle is ripe for some comfy realistic survival sim/colony builder game. And by colony I mean like a group management game since, at least where I work, people didn’t really live in one place year round.
Not to mention all the cool native legends and superstitions that could be worked in.
No man’s sky has some archeology elements but it’s not super interesting since you either just stumble upon ruins or make a recipe for a thingy that points you right to them. Making them harder to find and involving some kind of problem solving or puzzle solving/riddle solving would be interesting.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. There’s a whole list of things you can only do (working for the DOI where most fed arch’s are employed at least) with an MS in archeology. Look up the details on meeting the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archeologists
