I heard some speculation on this. A lot of these restaurant chains own their locations. When the buildings are super custom, think how Taco Bell and Pizza Hut locations used to look, it can be difficult to resell or close the restaurant and rent the building out.
Commercial real estate is about to take an even bigger shit, so they won't sell as that will be a loss. They're looking to become landlords with their low performing locations.
It's never directly about politics or culture. All of that is performative marketing with a company. It's about money. Some bean counter estimated that getting the buildings ready for potential tenants is more lucrative than the lost sales.
Same with the left and Target. Most people don't know that Target has a video forensics lab. They built it to fight organized theft rings. It got so good that they contract it out and do work for law enforcement. This is why they preemptively killed their DEI stuff. That $100 million they lost due to boycotts is going to be made up for by government contracts they'd have never gotten if they'd have pissed off Trump.
