A really good strategy is to get on sites like civitai.com and tensor.art and look around at the generated images other people have made with the checkpoints and loras and stuff there (if you click on the page for a given model, it'll show you stuff people made with it below the model info). You can look at their prompts and get a feel for the sorts of things that will and won't work. And you can play around with their prompts and see how changing things affects the output.

You can also ask people here what their prompts were. Some people will be dicks about it, but most people are happy to share.

As for prompting, go to danbooru and look up tags, illustrious was trained on danbooru images and their tags so it responds most strongly to them, the extension is just to automatically do this as you type in the prompt box.
