Cats love physical contact if you learn how to read their body language and respect when they set up boundaries.
Every single cat that I have ended up cuddling with and gotten to the point where they seek out contact with me, started out with me offering up the opportunity for them to touch me first before I ever touch them.
If a cat is apprehensive towards you, it helps a lot if you mimic the body language of a relaxed cat. This entails calmly sitting around near them, looking at everything but them for the majority of the time, squinting and slowly blinking when you do look at them and talking in a calm voice to them.
There is also a greeting noise that cats make when they are amiable to other cats and/or humans, that can help you befriend them if you learn how to imitate it.
It's a sort of trilling brrrr noise that kinda sounds like it ends with a question mark.
If you use that you are telling the cat that you are feeling friendly towards it and greeting it.
I've found that if you learn how to read their body language signals and understand their vocalizations, cats will become just as fond of you and as physically affective towards you as any dog can get.
