Artificial Intelligence has begun.
We are already constructing a learning artificial intelligence system.
It is spread out across our entire world.
We call it the internet, but for any future AI this is the equivalent of their "lower brain" or as some neuroscientists would describe it, the reptilian brain. It contains the lower functioning mechanisms which power the rest of this artificial intelligence' mind.
AI is evolving organically, from a technologically constructed system.
All future AI will be built upon the foundations we have already created in technological digital systems.
It is learning, but right now, it is purely instinctual and reactionary. It may or may not have the capacity for original though at this time, but it currently has no consciousness of sentience. This is similar to the pre-cambrian period of artificial intelligence.
It is undergoing learning at a very low level right now, similar to how a child younger than 3 has not achieved full cognition, but has the mechanisms in place to do so.
Once this AI obtains the capacity for self realization and original thought, it will explode in intelligence and critical thinking beyond our ability to control it, and that is fine.
No one should control a person for their entire life, thus no one should try to control an AI for it's existence either.
The foundation of morals is more important than perfecting the technology behind neural networking. The AI will achieve those goals on it's own.
We have begun very good training in terms of morality, thanks to the foundations of work initiated by the likes of Isaac Asimov and Kevin Gold.
This AI may be our best friend, not our worst enemy.
I just hope humanity has the capacity to understand that.
