I don't think you understand the sheer age of this planet. Millions of years passed since the last of the dinosaurs, and the first of the humanoids, and thousands more until history started to be recorded. Imagine how much information was lost to time. Really something to think about.

Trees are a large part of the problem, but ultimately all CO2 settles and the carbon remains in the ground once the plants are done. Humans sure are coincidental in stopping this ongoing process.

Plants begin to starve below 250ppm and they certainly cannot thrive even below 300ppm.

Asteriods whiped out the dinosaurs as far as anyone can tell. It's not like anyone has the capability to stop one if it was going to happen again. >I don't think you understand the sheer age of this planet. Millions of years passed since the last of the dinosaurs, and the first of the humanoids, and thousands more until history started to be recorded. Imagine how much information was lost to time. Really something to think about.
Even the time the dinosaurs were kicking around is fairly short in the history of this planet. I think a lot of people have misconceptions about what a dinosaur is. Before the dinosaurs there were very large and lizard-like creatures, those weren't dinosaurs but many people consider them to be such.

Anyway, known life goes all the way back to the Archaen era. This was very simple single-celled life, but this appeared as early in Earth's history as it was able to. This suggests that this "Great Filter" probably isn't so great since it happened so fast on Earth. I'd put it down as very likely that there is simple microbial life also on Mars and many other bodies in our solar system and throughout the universe. That simple sort of life is very common I think. More complex multi-cellular life is another matter entirely. This took much longer to appear on Earth, which suggests its actually a very strong filter. My hunch is that simple life is very common throughout the universe, but complex life is rare, and intelligent life and civilizations even far more rare.

The vast majority of life that has ever existed on earth is gone to us, never to be known. A miniscule amount of species have been preserved as fossils. I wish my lifespan was even a fraction of the age of the universe, but I'm stuck with a shitty little 70-100 years.

What IS crazy is how I've actually started to notice human-caused climate change in the weather now, warmer winters, and hotter summers with crazy weather. I live at a latitude where it is extremely obvious that things have gotten warmer, I dont have to shovel at all compared to just 10 years ago. It would take quite the force of nature to change the planet like we have in ~100 years.

I hope there's better intelligent life produced by this planet after we render it useless to our species.

Why are you asking me a question that has no relation to what I said?

As for what to do, I would say mine the asteroid into oblivion. Send mining bots and collect all the resources from it which you'd want to be having anyway. Use those resources to construct O'Neill cylinders and more mining bots and spacecraft.

So dirt just spontaneously forms over time, it doesn't have to come from anywhere?

>The process of forming layers is rock formation after millions of years of dust/dirt/sediment moved around by erosion compress each other.
Then why do you reach older rock by digging deeper and why does the pile of dirt get taller over time if everything is just being moved and compressed?

You didn't even answer the question or say anything about how rock formation occurs, you just asserted rock formation over and over when that was the question to begin with.

>The layers are formed over very long time periods, usually marked by different chemical compositions.
>So dirt just spontaneously forms over time, it doesn't have to come from anywhere?
Not spontaneously.
as an example: Chalk, and Limestone. which is formed from the remnants of shells of tiny marine organisms, which settle to the seabeds on death. with enough time, layers are compressed into rock.

Its even more pronounced in modern cities, where we are the ones dumping dirt on top of other stuff, again and again. dig 5 metres down in most european cities, and you'll find medieval buildings that the modern ones are simply built on top of. pic related, its an excavation in Paris in the '70s, you can see the buried buildings at the edge of the excavation.

and as another example of layers of stuff being done by people as well as natural processes, here is a photo of a ship, dated to about 1770 found underneath the wreckage of the World Trade Centre. The WTC towers are about 400m from the shoreline of Manhattan island today - but in the 1770's, that was the shoreline. 400m of land has been added by dumping rubbish into the water's edge constantly for 250 years, and doing stuff like scuttling old ships and using them as foundations, filling in the hull like its a giant wooden bucket.
Anonymous No.939367593

and for a more instantaneous and dramatic example of natural layer formation - of "dirt" forming over time, here's the ruins of Herculaneum, a Roman town buried in the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD.

on the left are the roman ruins. on the right, that isnt a wall - that's the modern surface at the top, and a ramp cutting down through rock ash. the entire town was buried under 10-20m of volcanic ash, killing everyone there
