Hey /b/. I need help creating a character for a personal project. The year is 1999, and she just turned 19. Her uncle Richard died and left his trailer home in her name, where do you think the trailer home is state wise?

You shouldn't base her state of residence off of a whim. You should be conscious of what environment you want to depict and the resources required to do so, which will vary significantly depending on the medium you choose for this "personal project".
Likely your simplest environment would be a barren desert in a state like New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona or California.
Very flat, very little to render.
If you want a mountainous pine forest, you're looking at Cascadia. If you want to be original with such an environment, you could go with Maine or the Adirondack region of New York.
It all depends on what you are willing to do.

Make sure it's the UP, the lower peninsula and especially Detroit hold no mystery.

There are national forests in the UP where the population density is less than one person per square mile. The Hiawatha forest is also wedged between two enormous bodies of water, no one knows what happens there.

Northeaster Michigan, Otonagon County, nearish to the Firesteel River.

Big forests, back country, small town vibes, lots of fishing spots, ancient growth woods, and old mining sites. Perfect backdrop for something spooky.

I'm just gonna project my fantasy.

Personally, I'd like to pick a state as cozy as the Scott Pilgrim universe: busy enough to be interesting, but not a New York scale; some distance between work and home life, ya know?

Dunno if Tennessee fits, though.

1999 makes some good room for some 2000's internet and gaming references, too.

Maybe in 4 years, you can mention this post.

I assure you, I don't. I picked Michigan because I know it's densely forested, sparsely populated, close to the Canadian border, and on Lake Superior... After that, I just hopped on google maps, saw a ninety degree angle of country roads with nothing but green nearby, zoomed in on it, read the name Firesteel, thought it was edgy and hilarious, then learned a bit about the county, it's history, and what the big industry was back in the eighteen hundreds. Took like, ten minutes.

Bleh I misstyped, You *probably* know more than me.

The project is just a silly little thing, I like to write short stories for characters i find interesting, Mainly slice of life and or slowburn call of cthulhu/the king in yellow kind of stuff. I'm not a good writer by any chance so I share them with close friends and not much else.

Don't blame you. It had a balanced juvenile style - Vibrant, yet gritty AND detailed.

Gurren Lagann, Kindgom Hearts and TWEWY are why I'm nostaglic for that style - there was something to look up to, that "cool kids" vibe.

You can go for a small coastal city.
It allows you to have a forest, mountains, beach, and have it all be close but not too close where it feels unrealistic.
