Look, I fucking hate Antifa, especially as a European that knows what they actually are - Americans really don't - but there's a central difference between public officials and private citizens, and pretending that there's not is retarded.
A public official such as a law enforcement officer is an enforcer by virtue of his very position, and should not be allowed to arbitrarily enforce aspects or angles of law in an anonymous manner, due to the inherently high potential for abuse, and the necessity of the public to have insight into the organizations that facilitate society on the public's behalf (again, to avoid abuse, whether that abuse is intentional or not).
A private citizen is under no such impetuous of standing up to scrutiny, and must be assumed to be a free agent as the fundamental component of the social pyramid. When acting against the public and breaking the implied social contract, it is arguably entirely valid to unmask offenders, if only for them to stand up to the public scrutiny that public officials are also subject to under that same logic (e.g. if you purport to speak and act for the public, the public has a right to examine your behaviour and structures) but that assumes that laws have already been broken or stances taken; it cannot reasonably be the default.
There's nothing hypocritical about saying "Me and the people should be allowed to mask ourselves for our own privacy and protection; public officials should not be allowed to obfuscate their actions and actors." And that's completely without even bringing up the imbalance of power and authority.
