I think 2 things:
It's not that unusual for an otherwise hetero male to occasionally feel an attraction to another male, fem, trans, or masculine. Even if it's only once or twice in their entire life.
It's only been about a generation or two since it's not been worthy of violence to be gay. Even Gen X folks grew up with being gay being the absolute worst thing you could be (in the US, anyway). Now it's still a thing in some circles, but for the most part, most people don't care, especially for people they don't know.
Put that together, and you have a situation where if a straight guy feels a physical attraction for the first time at, say, 25, he's more likely to say fuck it and give it a try. Whereas 20 or 30 years ago he'd just suppress and bury that urge.
I'm old af and last year I let a dude suck me off. First time I ever did anything with a guy but I felt a spark and we went to the bathroom. Hot shit.
