There's also a big difference between outrage of a racial lynching and trying to overturn the results of democracy.

We're never going to be free of Cancel Culture if we create consequences for the exercise of free speech. The entire point of the 1st Amendment is because from the Founder's vantage point they could see the terrible consequences speaking held for so many. From our vantage point? We can see the terrible consequences of not having even more protections in place.

If you impose consequences for speech, then you're not for free speech. You're for censorship, because the natural inclination to avoid the consequences of speaking is to self-censor. Is it really so much better that someone with vital information remains silent because the state threatens them with direct political imprisonment as opposed to individuals attacking that person's ability to earn a livelihood, risking homelessness, and then effectively being imprisoned by the state anyway? It's the same result with more steps.

By protecting the speech that is vile and evil you make it so there is no beachhead the stymie the speech that is rare and vital. It is just that simple
