very much agreed on the high art thing and I think there's a tendency to foreground Big Ideas over the million other qualities at play in any given film
I do like the neorealist stuff I've seen although I think the ones I was most drawn to were the films already showing signs of transformation, like early Pasolini or the Rossellini Bergman collaborations. I like the same raw qualities in French cinema of the 1960s and beyond although it took them awhile to strip it of a lot of the meta/referential stuff

it's pretty grim lol I liked the most recent Clint Eastwood movies but I'm struggling to think of anything else. I still haven't seen Song to Song. I tried rewatching A Hidden Life recently and even though I liked it when it came out it wasn't doing it for me this round
