My public schooling had general education that was required for all to take, i.e., English, Social Studies, Mathematics, and then "paths" to more advanced courses of classes such as automotive, foreign languages or AP Biology. You had to take advanced versions of some classes to qualify for the AP, That's about it. And the casting is done by the students and placement coaches, it doesn't force you into castes, their goal is to make you entry level college ready at minimum, so students struggling in English, for example, might have to take English over or an additional remedial English class. Wanting to take AP was done by the students' thirst for knowledge. I personally took AP Biology and AP Anatomy and Physiology because I'm fascinated by those subjects. Some students were mechanics by the time they graduated. Others were in Band and got up to the symphonic classical musician level before graduation.
Maybe mine was one of the few really good ones, but I consider public schooling wonderful and absolutely essential to our society.
