My feelings on games are generally complex and require atleast one essay length post, even when I try to be brief. But no, its not difficulty. I find difficulty at this point to be a shallow and juvenile concept. I dont actually believe it exists anymore. At the very least not how its used. Have enough experience and youll realize how easily and most importantly ARBITRARILY variable "difficulty" can be, despite playing against the exact same enemies. Whether its difficulty options, or build options, or RNG, or the simple fact of playstyle. I watched a youtube video once that highlighted something interesting about the Witcher 3, I dont remember why he was talking about this. But he mentioned something about how difficulty options dont really work, because lets say you have a sort of beginner "tutorial" area. And You have two types of players. They both pick the highest difficulty. The first player gets through the tutorial by playing slow and safe, they dont die a lot. But the 2nd player dies a lot, because they play, fast and reckless, taking any opportunity and risk for damage even if not necessarily advantageous. His point was essentially that the first player will move on thinking they picked the right difficulty and then later on when the game gets harder, theyll be dissatisfied, the 2nd player despite dying a lot, is actually a better player, theyre comfortable enough with difficult games that theyre willing and able to go for those risks, and the difficulty would be fitting for them.
I might go look for the video because he puts it much better than I paraphrased. But the point is. Difficulty isnt real, its subjective, and even giving it that much "realness" is something I've been contending with, it might not even be about whether its subjective or not. But anyway thats my point
