In case why anybody can intuitively tell that this is retarded, but doesn't know why:

1) The vacuum in space doesn't suck. There's just far less stuff. When you see scenes where things get "sucked" into space, it's an exchange of pressure.
2) Space also isn't empty, especially near earth where the ISS and other spacecraft, which are the primary target of these retards, maneuver.
3) The absence of stuff works both ways. Yes, it technically is harder to accelerate without (lots of matter) to push of off, however you also barely have any drag, so it balances out.

can't tell if trolling because this is one of the oldest counterintuitive troll physics questions on the web, but here's the real answer.

>engine generates thrust by "pushing" against air
>thrust moves plane forward
>this creates air movement over wings
>this generates lift

"but the treadmill means the plane doesn't move forward!"
why?

the engine pushes against the air. not against the ground. in your car the engine turns the wheels that then push against the ground but planes don't work that way. the wheels in planes are free spinning. if you put a plane on a treadmill it just means the wheels would spin freely twice as fast. the engine still acts against the atmosphere, not the ground. all of the "backwards" pushing done by the treadmill is eaten up by the free-spinning wheels and has no effect on the plane, so the engine pushing against the air still moves the plane forward.

Thrust from the propeller moves the plane forward so that the wings can have enough air moving over them to generate lift. The propeller itself does not move enough air over the wings in this design to generate lift. Without being able to move forward along the ground, the wings will not be moving fast enough to generate enough lift to take off.
Anonymous No.940940992
>>940940933
Airplanes don't move forward on the ground by delivering power to the wheels like a car, they move forward by pushing through air just like when they're flying. An airplane on a conveyor will move forward at exactly the same speed as one on solid ground and will need exactly the same amount of runway to take off.

It's not even that. A balloon functions completely different from a rocket. Balloons push off the ai so they obviously don't work in a vaccuum. Rockets work more like gun recoil. They shoot something back really hard and according to Newtons third law, the equal and opposite force accelerates the rocket. This is like saying that boats shouldn't be able to move because you can't walk on water, even though boats work more like swimming than walking.

>why have planes build up ground speed before lift-off?
because the amount of lift generated by the wings depends on the speed of the plane. planes only have their propellor/jet engines, they don't have a separate engine for their wheels.

>Also, are you saying plane wheels will achieve theoretically limitless speed if needed?
yep. they're just an unpowered axle.

it's like imagine a front wheel drive car. if you lift the car off the ground you can stand at the back of the car and spin the rear wheels by hand at infinity speed because it's just an unpowered axle. but no matter how much you rev the engine, you will never spin the rear wheels that way because the rear wheels are not connected to the engine.

Ok I guess from reading the thread since it's always the engines pushing the plane onwards, even on the ground. So is the runway thing more of an automatic space constraint due to the time needed for the engines to start up and get to flight velocity or something?,

yes, you could absolutely take off in this scenario, but you would probably shred your landing gear

few things are intuitive
there was a time when programs came with printed out instructions. the first LOZ (NES) included a pamphlet with the cart, complete with a step-by-step walkthru of the first half of the game

Umm.
Wow.
Thats totally not what a propeller does.

A propeller works as a rotating wing (dame as a helicopter).
Air flows over a wing and the differential of air pressure pushes up on the wing.
With a propeller, the air pressure pushes the propeller forward. Movement of the craft causes airflow over the wing.
Again, just as a helicopter, the "wind" produced by the spinning blades is inconsequential and a side effect and does not provide lift or thrust.

It still baffles me that retards can't understand this.
The wheels are free, so the speed of the belt is irrelevant. The belt could be moving 'backwards" at 300mph and so long as the wheels can handle it mechanically it won't move the plane. This is because the prop is pushing against the air, not the ground. So again as long as the wheels can handle the mechanical movement speed, the plane will go forward at whatever speed it needs to to take off.
