The Apple River stabbing incident a few years ago is a perfect example of group confirmation bias and white knights wanting to attack someone to seem virtuous.

It was muddy river water, visibility was probably only a few feet, he probably couldn't even see her at all

It all started because some random person called him a pedo. It is like a witch trial. There doesn't need to be any evidence. The accusation of being called a pedo is the only evidence the crowd needs to punish you.
