by the way, check their teeth. if you see issues, kick the parent out of the room and ask the kid about toothpaste. adults belittle a kid's actual issues as "he doesn't like toothpaste". that's bullshit and child abuse.
some people's gums and tongue react badly to menthol. consider the reaction to be like a chemical burn, except the pain from the menthol is masked by the "cool" feeling of the menthol.
there are menthol-free tooth pastes. around here, they're labeled as "compatible with homeopathy" because not all toothpastes confess (plainly) to containing menthol. keep a few tubes in a closet somewhere. have the kid sample the taste (spatula?). if menthol is the issue, the kid might be surprised and become excited.
I'm saying this as an adult with lots of tooth issues because I'm a little autistic, abused by a retarded mother, and nobody ever took me seriously about the toothpaste. they just went "then just brush without it". god! so many adults belong in woodchippers. when I was 32 I finally had had enough of the issues and went looking for menthol-free toothpaste. it was precisely the issue I've always had with toothpaste. since then, tooth decay has essentially stopped, except for what was already close to collapsing.
