Good beginner friendly synths?
Picrel. Currently looking at this synth as a main contender for my first, but was curious if any of you /b/tards had any relevant experience/input you'd feel like sharing

minifreak isn't exactly conventional, beginner building block synth, behringer ms-1.

I've been using an Arturia Mini V since 2013, but it's a decent synth regardless of its age. It's just a really simple synth, and it's great for EDM, which is what I play most of the time

it's a mono but you can be a keytar faggot with it. if you need a poly something like korg minilogue or the behringer poly d moog clone

Definitely digging the price point of the mini v. since I’m coming into this as a total novice, it would be nice to go for something around this price in case my interest fizzles out

Model D on iOS
OR whichever Roland keyboard you like playing at the store.
Animoog on iOS is advanced to program, but easy to play with.
JX-08 can do a lot.

I could make a more effective EDM song, better produced, three times faster than you, thoroughly complete, USING ONLY MY GODDAMN SAMSUNG PHONE

I wouldn't even need a MIDI out keyboard for VSTs... I would use a shitty rudimentary crappy app called CAUSTIC 3 And I would use a step sequencer manually building my arpeggios one click at a time.

having an actual keyboard that has cheesy "accompaniment" garbage built into it? That's not the way you create music

But then again, I painted a convincing replica of the Mona Lisa on a giant dance floor using paint rollers on the end of wooden poles

I could paint I really really beautiful portrait using q-tips if I wanted

You don't need fancy equipment

here's something I created using only my Samsung phone, and a crappy shitty rudimentary extremely extremely simple little toy sequencer app called CAUSTIC 3

I'm not bragging
In fact, it's completely imperfect

But it serves as a good example
that you can create complete pieces without good equipment

Little bit of column A, little bit of column B, man. I’ve always been an analogue guy though—guitars, ocarina, harmonica, never recorded any of my musings. Just finding myself more interested in electronic music as of late so I really want to try it out and something physical to fuck around with is more up my alley since that’s been how I’ve interacted with music as an art form

I lucked out and I got my hands on the very first sequencers back in the day when digital sequencers were first invented

In Memphis I got my hands on a fairlight system which was the very best at the time, and in Atlanta I got my hands on and EMAX Emulator

they didn't have graphic user interfaces like FL studio or anything, it was just a little rectangular strip of silver and black

it said
PATTERN 2
instead of a beautiful graphic with steps and effects and visual representation of what you were building

You had to do it all Just looking at that little tiny bit of information in the LCD screen

PATTERN PASTED

But I have a lot of friends whose parents had money, and they wanted to make music, so they had their parents buy them a bunch of expensive equipment...

But then they didn't know what to do with it

they overthought everything, and focused on the minutiae, instead of focusing on the music

they didn't know how to operate their sequencers so they would always ask me to come teach them.

And I would come over and demonstrate, actually building an entire song right in front of them, from the ground up.

most of those friends ended up selling the equipment after a couple years of just sitting there not making any music

BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE PASSION TO CREATE THE COMPLETED PROJECT

they focused on the equipment
AND DIDN'T FOCUS ON THE MUSIC

my advice?

The same advice my brother gave me one I asked him to teach me how to play guitar:

"You don't want to learn on an electric guitar because it's easier to play. You want to learn on an old acoustic so it's harder to play... because if you learn on something that's harder to play, you really LEARN, whereas if you're taking the easy way out, you're not as strong of a guitarist"

It's like learning how to be a UFC fighter

you'll be a much better fighter
If you learn by getting in the ring with someone who will knock your ass out

instead of getting in the ring with a cream puff

You should focus on
THE PASSION OF COMPLETING THE SONG

and not worry about the equipment you're using

I painted murals for a living. A nightclub opened in Atlanta that was half art gallery half dance club

(stupid trendy idea)

they had a big ass dance floor, and my clients commissioned me to paint the Mona Lisa on the dance floor

a gigantic Mona Lisa

where do you begin?
BY JUMPING IN HEADFIRST
WITH A PASSION FOR THE ART
NOT WORRIED ABOUT MATERIALS

I used BEHR™ exterior latex house paint
really big wide roller pads, on roller handles, attached with wooden poles

I divided the entire dance floor off into a series of squares, and matched that grid work onto the Mona Lisa painting and I executed the painting one square at a time

when I was finished, you could go upstairs to the atrium and look down on the dance floor and IT LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE THE MONA LISA

It was painted with roller pads

You don't need quality material to execute your art

You could make a masterpiece with a q-tip

instead of worrying about a keyboard
you should focus on

1: your SEQUENCER.... like FL Studio

2: your AUDIO EDITOR (like sound forge or cool edit which were old programs I used to use back in the day)

The SEQUENCER is where you actually build the music

But You don't use the sequencer to do your detailed AUDIO EDITING

The two go hand in hand, you have to bounce back and forth between your editor to make certain modifications then send it back into your sequencer to construct it into the song

most of this is done using a generic midi keyboard usually featuring only 12 semitones

(notes)

and the octave is handled with your sequencer

You could stall and waste time complaining that you don't have the latest plugins for Photoshop...

or you can shut the fuck up and grab a ballpoint pen and get busy with your art

because people who aren't ready to create art always STALL focus on materials instead

damn I wish I was there I'd teach you how to operate it and get WILD results
Anonymous No.941150203 [Report]
You could buy an expensive base station but then you would need a drum machine and then you would need another synthban d another synth and this outboard doohickey and that doohickey

And then you would still need a sequencer to chain it all together

That's a lot of money

or you could simply use FL Studio which has exact digital replicas of all kinds of synthesizers and outboard equipment and base stations and effects and everything all wrapped into one monster

with beautiful graphics

absolutely gorgeous graphics

and a step sequencer piano roll in which you can literally create a visual representation of how you are bending and manipulating the audio wave files

stretching and changing pictures and modifying LFO waveforms

all with a visual representation while you're doing it

I'm pretty sure it's still free the demo version

and I used to create music all the time using the demo version just saving one pattern at a time

creating patterns and exporting them and putting them back together later with an audio editor

and FL Studio demo is free so you really can't beat it

THATS how to learn to construct your music from the ground up, starting with a kick drum, and working your way upwards into slicing vocals into tiny little pieces etc etc etc

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION:
I'm about to turn you on to a song that features perhaps some of THE VERY BEST digital audio production.

The way it's structured mathematically, from the very beginning, the way it builds, the layers, the undulation, the sequential addition of new elements as the patterns continue

NASTY RHYTHM
by CREATIVE THIEVES ™

This song is absolutely genius

in particular, I want you to focus on
THE WAY THE SONG ENDS!!!!!!!!!;!

after starting as a babbling brook, then building and building, finally the song begins to literally DISINTEGRATE

The woman's vocals begin to shatter into little slices

But notice the mathematical technique of slicing her vocals

It starts with teeny tiny little sections of silence, And as it continues, those silent sections become bigger and bigger, and now it's her vocals that begin to turn into tiny little slices

by the end, her voice has become little tiny grains of sand

It's a process
stretched out over the perfect amount of time
until what was originally vocals has now disintegrated into microscopic little grains of sand floating away

fucking insane

ENJOY
(This is also the perfect song to have sex to)

https://youtu.be/-IioAzdgqqI?si=5GC-xa2AiUuNzXri

Ladies and gentlemen I give you
THE NASTY RHYTHYM
(it's about fucking)

It starts off with a black woman telling her man "You got the goods" (a big dick) "MOVE YOUR BABY!" (make me cum)

If you got headphones

WEAR THEM.....

If you've got weed

SMOKE IT

close your eyes and let the song NASTY RHYTHYM take you away
Anonymous No.941150908 [Report]
the way NASTY RHYTHYM disintegrates and splinters into nothing?...

instead of worrying about which brand of keyboard

focus on CREATING SPECIAL EFFECTS

AUDIO EFFECTS...
that's why FL Studio is what you're looking for

not a keyboard

in FL Studio, you can slice and dice and wrap and fold sounds, using their amazing beautiful GUI to visually represent what you are doing to the WAV files, bending and manipulating and modifying them with a visual representation.

special effects

FL STUDIO by IMAGELINE

it has THE BEST, most thoroughly complete "HELP" feature, where if you pass your cursor over any object on the screen, It will tell you exactly what that object does and how to use it

it's foolproof

It literally tells you what every item is and exactly how to use it just by passing your cursor over the object

I've had tremendous results with a Korg Mini. Later, I think they renamed it the Micro Korg. This thing interfaced with the whole MIDI system right away. I really like it coupled with a Boss DR-202 drum machine, among others. I've played guitar for a long time but this keyboard definitely changed my music in a good way. Sometimes, I just use it for a WALL of bass. There IS a learning curve but it's an enjoyable one. Hope this helped.
