You should be afraid of hell. Not because of fire and brimstone, but because it is eternal separation from what is good. The Lord, our God is good.
Let me tell you something, he will never send anyone to hell. If you end up going there, you go there by your own free choice. That place was never created for man, it was created for the angels who rebelled against him. It was created for being who rebelled and chose to go against God. But after the fall of man in the garden, hell became accessible to man. But the Lord sent his son to free us from that place. To free us from the grips of sin.
On the cross, he said “father forgive them, for they know not what they do” and “it is finished”. The first part was for his crucifies and for all of humanity because we sin without fully realizing what we’re doing we’re not just hurting our relationship with each other, but with God. We have send out of ignorance because we don’t know the full penalty of it, how serious it is. We make mistakes and make bad choices without fully realizing the consequence of it.
But the second part that he said was that his atonement work on the cross is finished, has been, and always will be for those who believe in him and accept him as their Lord and savior. He was a man and all God, so his blood was able to cover all of humanity throughout all time.
But we must confess our sins and turn away from them as well. Like the thief on the cross. He acknowledged his sinful nature and confessed to Jesus, and accepted him as Lord, and Jesus said unto him “ truly, I say unto you, for today you shall be with me in paradise.”
