Unfortunately for conservatives, the 14th amendment of the US constitution prohibits states from denying any person within their jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Its a representative democracy. You vote for people who vote for actual shit. But also every state has initiative and/or referendum procedures to allow for direct democracy on certain issues.

Basic ally, its rooted around this concept of "fair play for the other guy" Another big aspect is that sometimes, you lose elections AND you have to be ok with that.

When you move to ban freedom of speech, ban political organizations, remove candidates from the ballot, or simply deny anytime you lose an election as fraud (based on nothing but conspiracy theories) you dont care about democracy, youre just a maniac who wants power.

You are right we are a republic.Democracy has become interchangeable with republic since 1776.

A republic doesnt require democratic functions. It specifically limits or restricts the scope and impact of any democratic function.

For example, everyone is bound by rules and laws and constitutional principles pretty much regardless of electoral popularity. There is a very high threshold for changing core details.

A democracy would more closely follow majority rule.

A democratic republic would be a closer description but a democratic republic can exist without everyone being bound to a constitution.

So we are a constitutional republic with democratic functions. Which is important because you could have a constitutional republic without democratic functions.
