However, some items, including $28,000 worth of furniture, were also on the National Park Service list, meaning they were intended to be permanent gifts to the White House collection. Donors reportedly believed the furnishings were meant to stay in the White House.
The resolution: After news of the overlapping gifts became public, the Clintons returned the items that were intended for the White House collection. They also reimbursed the government $86,000 for other gifts they opted to keep.
