why don't humans build nice buildings anymore?

cuz they cost money. the above average joe would rather get funding for a parking lot or park even, contract indians for cheap labor then pocket the rest.
i'd do the same tbh.
you also need skilled craftsmen and you can't really import them by the container

It is a pain in the ass to keep a building that size warm in the winter. My thousands of dollars for firewood and oil could instead be used for Piper Rockelle's upcoming OnlyFans instead.

They are extremely expensive and requires what is essentially slave labor. Plus, they are excessive. Our excess wants are no longer in beauty in objects but in material, things

>It took about 182 years to build Notre Dame Cathedral, from the start of construction in 1163 to its completion in 1345
Might have something to do with it.

My point is what organizations have the capital and longevity to even spend two centuries building a building?

most likely because you are a reactionary or conservative who refuses to look at actual modern architecture, instead defaulting to a rose-tinted nostalgia for structures built in past millennia as a justification for your personal biases.

Ultimately it's because work is simply work.
There's no pride or sense of legacy because no one actually cares about the work anymore. When work is diluted with so much meaningless shit and abstraction, there's no push for a legacy.

Because nobody builds their building with a sense of the local style and spending extra to make it look nice, nobody does it. There's also no point because ultimately you're going to have advertisements stuck onto it.

Dopamine disregulation that can be further parted out into pieces. For example we're so inundated with noisy (in the visual sense) things on our screens that visually looking at yet more noisy things causes fatigue. 100 years ago that noise would be a feast for the eyes, and while something like a cathedral still is? Home interiors are more "modern" or rather visually simple to give the brain breathing space to process. There's also the matter of focus, especially collective focus, and that's part of the reason why internet use has blossomed and flourished with all sorts of utility and functionality, things to see, things to experience... meanwhile people find real life to be rather dull by comparison. So less focus and effort on making elaborate buildings and more focus and effort making and using things online.

etc.
