Gauges in the ears are fine (as long as they're 20mm or smaller). Ears are a normal spot for such piercings. It's the big ass piercings anywhere else that are the problem, like that comically big nose ring. A small lower lip piercing might be ok but those people just overdo it.

First, that type of appearance is hardly that unusual or extreme anymore. It's become a lot more common in the last few decades. Now as far as being a conformist goes, when someone adopts a particular look that has been well established by a particular group of people it is not an act of self expression. The person wants to be identified as belonging to that group, conforming to their standards of appearance and in most cases views, musical tastes etc. The starting point with these types of people is always first finding the group they want to belong to, then they reshape everything about themselves to fit in, or conform.

What you're saying about such people being slavish conformists to their subculture makes sense. The problem is that the people who like to point out how conformist those with alt styles are often think they themselves are more independent, even though they never break any of society's norms or expectations.
