How about no? Not4chan was still alive. Demonoid and Kickass was still alive. Blackcatgames was still accepting registrations. Most japanese sites still didn't block western ips.

Nope. It has always been bad in some way. Making the the endless cycle of popup ads a crime was one of the few good things the government ever did.
The early days had no videos or search engines. Then the search engines sucked but were constantly improving. Then the search engines separated the porn from everything else and got kinda good at providing results.
Once that happened censorship went crazy. It should be around 2002 or 2003. I remember that was when every site suddenly started to care about copyright. Mass deletions everywhere for stupid reasons with whoever was behind censoring Kingdom Hearts music leading the way.
At some point many sites introduced a sort by tag system which was of course used for mass deletions.
I knew it was all going to shit when deviant art started telling people they needed to be a certain age to see things.
Everyone scoffs at the "Are you 18+?" check box because they don't realize governments will go to nearly any length to enforce their madness. If they can't get their way in one go they turn it into a slow boil process.

Yea, but it had a peak content richness around mid of 2000s. Content was produced and uploaded constantly, search engines was at peak usefullness, and censorship still didn't strike hard enough.
Nowdays we have almost no meaningful content pruduced, instead everything flooded with ai slop and low effort shit that bury any useful content under the dozen search pages. And amazing old contend gets deleted every day.
What a shit time to be alive...

the main reason i count 2011 as the year it went to shit is because that was the year i noticed everybody being only, and every TV station posted their site urls, and Internet usage was just finally a normal thing for everybody outside of e-mails.
that plus the breaking apart of anonymity caused by anti-social media platforms and governments realizing that they should be able to tell who people are online.
pre 2005 internet was still the wild west, then it diminished until 2011, and now CloudFlare acts like a man-in-the-middle attacker on almost all traffic online and we can't even sign up for a permanent e-mail without a telephone number. even protonmail has fallen and requires a phone number to be used, they cover this up until you start receiving mails.
