The whole meme is "we can't tell off-handed rude jokes about groups of people because those groups are now playing with us and can take offense to them."
If I was a game dev, the exact type of person I don't want to continue to shit up my community is the one who just says the same thing about women and trannies over and over again. Not even the average player wants to engage with that person.
For that matter, some estimates show that the growth of gaming in the LGBT community causes them to be vastly underrepresented compared to their demographics; they are an astounding 9-15% of the gaming community, or between 1/10(ish) and 1/6. For board games, tabletop, and live service, the same appears to be true.
It makes no sense to not give them at least 1/10 people on a screen.
