I've been unemployed since 2011, so I'm not "Unemployed" no longer in the stats. Been constantly seeking permanent employment while taking temp jobs, working less than 5 months each year. Just barely covering living costs, and obviously not insured.
Should be easy for me, born US citizen, no criminal history, don't use drugs, don't smoke, don't drink alcohol, BS in mechanical engineering, 8 years aerospace experience, CAD tech in 5 programs, etc etc.
I applied for SNAP and other benefits and have been constantly denied for years.
Illegal immigrant neighbor (after death threats did a background check on him, career felon in multiple states, but he is mexican so DEI privileges) leeching on a social security disability birth defect woman, they have housing paid for, foodstamps, can freely deal drugs from there, stolen cars get hauled off weekly (seen the spics suddenly scatter minutes before police arrive), etc etc.
Since I'm a crime free white citizen... well, government says I don't have any rights and I'm supposed to be the one paying for illegals to ruin the system.
By the way, lengths of random cables found on the side of road strung through loops on the walls can turn an apartment balcony in a decent garden, and it looks like I'm eating winter squash for the next few months.

SNAP spending during 2024 was 99.8 billion accounting for ~1.5% of total federal spending. 2024 was the 3rd consecutive year of a decrease in spending on SNAP, which was at an all time high during 2021 at 132.2 billion. 2023-2024 was actually the highest reduction in SNAP spending on record when adjusted for inflation.

All stats come directly from "Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - Key Statistics and Research" on the usda website.

SNAP is a benefit that literally helps people stay alive. People depend on It's used by red states and blue states.

If you're serious about reducing spending on SNAP, then you should be advocating for higher minimum wage.

~70% of non disabled working age people who benefit from SNAP are working full time hours according to the Government Accountability Offices article "Federal Social Safety Net Programs:
Millions of Full-Time Workers Rely on Federal Health Care and Food Assistance Programs".

The top employers of these people are companies like Mcdonalds, Amazon, Walmart, and Burger King.

Large corporations are using government assistance programs to subsidize paying for their workforce while they rake in record profits.

At the end of the day though, these assistance programs do a lot of good. I'm fine with my tax dollars going to help out people in need.

Is there fraud and inefficiency? Yes, but doing anything at this scale is going to come with problems. I'd rather someone who doesn't deserve benefits get them if it means that a mom and her kids do. Again, I'd rather not have the former, but it's not a perfect system and we can't expect it to be.
