From 2009 to 2010, the website grew from 60 million to 130 million unique visitors; in 2011 it was 190 million, in 2012 it was 229 million.
In 2013, when they began actively blocking VPN addresses, it was 223 million by the beginning of November. My point is, the website grew the vast majority of its user base well before 2016. I know many of you can pinpoint 2016 as your join date, but that's because you're the right wing morons I was talking about.
