I, for one, am happy for 4 years of white girl summer in Virginia. You see this is the beginning of the end of identity politics. For decades, the Democratic party always pushed "historic firsts" above all else. It was imperative that we elect Obama as the first Black president because anything less would be racist. It was imperative that we elect Kamala Harris as the first Black female president. Anything less would be racist and misogynistic.
But in the face of electing the not only the first female governor of Virginia, but also making her black, the Democratic party instead decided to focus on qualification over identity.
This is a welcome change and I look forward to Identity politics no longer driving the Democrats' political strategies.
