To me, because I guess I do know healthy relationships now, I've turned down relationships recently because I know I'm not in a good place to be good for anyone. Particularly not her, she would've let me get away with anything, it took a lot of effort to actually push her away from me because she had a false idealisation of me from me helping her get out of a very long bad relationship. Thankfully she's moved on and married now.

That must have been hard, but ultimately good. I also still am not in any kind of serious position yet, not stable, etc. Knowing myself, I would RELISH that kind of woman in every way shape and form, guaranteed turning it into a co-dependant mess. Probably for me it would be kind of a thing where I would be in love with how much she loves me, and while not abusive I would use that to justify completely embedding into an ultimately toxic reciprocal er transactional relationship. I do wish to feel what devotion feels like once in my life though, knowing what I would do with it still.

I don't think pure devotion is ever healthy to be honest. Honesty and reciprocation. If you can do that and be mostly reliable, then you're fine to be in a relationship. I'm not reliable and I have substance abuse issues. I could see how bad it would've been both for me and my friend who was trying very hard to be in a relationship with me, for us to have been in one. But I'm glad she's found a healthy relationship now, because I did put a lot of effort into helping her leave the unhealthy one she'd been stuck in for so many years. I wasn't about to subject her to another one with me :)

That completely makes sense. With me the biggest issues are trust (on my end) and spending most of my adult life alone. What is your poison? What substance doth thee abuse? I was pretty much a non-religous puritan, only started drinking in mid 20s. Tell me what it is like.

Well the issue I would've had with her was that she was holding me in far too high esteem. There was already a power imbalance and it was glaringly obvious to me. I'm just an alcoholic to be honest, I've been better and worse over the years but I'm pretty bad right now. Living on my own again and both my dogs died last year

Oh. Alcohol isn't too bad, don't let it kill you though, had a Staff Sergeant I knew closely go that way a while ago, not pretty at all. Sucks about the dogs, man, mine is 11 so gotta prepare for that too mentally somewhere soon. The codependance would fuck me up with that kind of woman, I would try to feed everything back into her, trying to deserve the admiration or at least keep it, basically at the expense of everything and everyone else. That kind of power imbalance with me would probably end up making everybody who knows me hate her, cuz I would try to shelter and nourish it above all else.

I only drink every other day but I drink about a fifth of vodka every other day, so not good. My Labrador was 14 but I had to have him put down January last year because his back legs were fucked. His son was half Staffordshire bull terrier, and he just died next to me last November suddenly. And now my mother is on the phone drunk because apparently today is the anniversary of my stepfather's death. I best be off I guess
