In practice everything on your computer is just math processed by complex calculations, made up of simpler calculations bundled together.
The processor, for all intents and purposes, is the computer. It solves all the math, which makes the computer do things.

There are different kinds of math, and processors can be designed to specialize in specific ones.
The CPU is specialized in the kind of math that makes the computer run and will handle most of the load of your operating system and all the basic functions that make the whole system work.

The GPU handles a different kind of math, mostly related to processing and generating computer graphics. The CPU is bad at this kind of math, which is why the GPU exists in the first place. You could technically run a PC without as GPU and have the CPU run all the graphics processing, but it would just be slow as shit.

However, graphics aren't the only computations that use the kind of math GPUs are good at. Crypto mining and AI processing and a bunch of other complex tasks (professional music rendering, for example) also use similar math to graphics processing, and so GPUs are quite good at it and have gotten better at it over time as newer models are designed specifically with it in mind. So nowadays the GPU does most things on your PC, while the CPU really just handles the basic busywork necessary to keep the system working.

This is part of the reason CPU advancements have stagnated over the past decade while GPUs become more expensive and scarce. The number of things the CPU needs to do hasn't really increased, and CPU load only increases marginally has programs get bigger and more complex, but the burden on the GPU has increased exponentially as it is assigned ever more, and more complex tasks.

That's a poor explanation. CPUs have good single-thread performance. If a task is difficult to parallelize (the performance doesn't scale well with the number of threads), it should run on the CPU. GPUs excel at tasks that are easy to compute using a large number of threads in parallel. 3D rendering and machine learning massively benefit from the way GPUs handle computation.

A Gpu has literal thousands of cores. A 5090 has over 20,000 cores. Cpu's are only really needed to feed the Gpu with content. The Gpu nowadays basically do everything but they suck at sequential tasks, which is why the Cpu is still needed to keep things in sync. Render this, and then this, now this... The Cpu is like the music director. It barely do anything anymore but swing a baton.

Games that are heavy on Cpu is bad programming/design. Also the more cores a Cpu has the higher the latency, so is not really a good idea to keep adding more and more cores to Cpu's to use in games, not to mention is a scalability nightmare to keep breaking up code into more and more chunks and keeping everything in sync.

Eventually when chips move from electricity to light, like the internets went from copper/electricity to fiber/light, none of this stuff will be a problem anymore because light can change color and issue multiple instructions at the speed of light. Light causes less frictions than electricity too, so cooling won't be an issue anymore either. Current problem is that packing a bunch of tiny fibers into a chip is still kind of a complicated issue but photonic chips already exist, just not as high performance as current Cpu and Gpu because they are still looking for ways to make fiber smaller/tinier/finer.
