My mom opened my mail and saw I received an EBT card. She started freaking out saying that "it looks bad" and she said she had never been as angry in her life. She started yelling at me saying it's for poor people. BUT I am poor. I make less than $100 per month. Why is she so angry about ANYTHING. It is my business. The state of Michigan allows individuals who are 23 or older to receive food assistance as long as their household income is below a certain amount. And my household is 1. As after the age of 23, regardless of where you live, your income is your own.

I am really annoyed. She told me she will not allow me to use the card in our town. I hate living with them.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't use it or that her feeling are justified, but there is a level of familial pride/honour that people should try to adhere to. Try not to make your family look like losers (it may cause issues for your siblings or other members of your family, for instance, if you guys get a bad reputation around town).

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with people using an EBT card (and I wasn't aware they're indistinguishable from a credit card), but reputation is something that's important, and I do think that the 'who cares what anybody else thinks?' attitude is a bit too for down the individualistic pipeline. I'd have been on board ten years ago, but now I have a bit more wisdom regarding human behaviour and character, and I do see the benefits of a society that isn't as vehemently individualistic as we in the West have become.
So yes, I don't think it's great to pour scorn on someone who is using EBT, I do understand the more traditional, societal perspective that older generations can have (even if most of them sold us out).
