Linux now runs games faster than Windows 11

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2025/06/games-run-faster-on-steamos-than-windows-11-ars-testing-finds/

Nearly a decade ago, Ars testing found that Valve's "Steam Machines"-era version of

>SteamOS (a variation of Linux) performed significantly worse than Windows

when SteamOS's Linux game ports were tested on the same hardware as their Windows counterparts.

>Today, though, Ars testing finds recent games generally run at higher frame rates on SteamOS 3.7 than on Windows 11.

As you can see in the included charts, SteamOS showed noticeable frame rate improvements in four of the five games tested. Only Borderlands 3 showed comparable performance across both operating systems, with Windows eking out ever-so-slightly higher frame rates in that game's benchmarks.

For the other four tested games, the stock Lenovo Windows drivers were sometimes significantly worse than those included with SteamOS.

When playing Returnanal at "High" graphics presets and 1920x1200 resolution, for instance, changing from Lenovo's Windows drivers to SteamOS meant the difference between a hard-to-take 18 FPS average and a downright decent 33 FPS average.

Sideloading the updated Asus drivers showed a noticeable improvement in Windows performance across all tested games and even brought Homeworld 3's "Low" graphics benchmark test to practical parity with SteamOS. In all other cases, though, even these updated drivers resulted in benchmark frame rates anywhere from 8 percent to 36 percent lower than those same benchmarks on SteamOS.

These results might seem a bit counterintuitive, considering that games running on SteamOS must go through a Proton translation layer. But Valve has put in consistent work over the years to make Proton as efficient and cross-compatible as possible; not to mention its continued work on Linux's Mesa graphics drivers seems to be paying dividends for SteamOS graphics performance.

Unless OEMs like Dell/HP start loading Linux on their prebuilt systems, 99% of people are not going to use it. The only reason why they were willing to do it for Chrome OS is because the computers they put it on were so cheap they could just be written off if they didn't sell. Oh, and also because Chrome was so familiar to the average normie that Chrome OS didn't generate tons of support calls for OEMs. Linux would be an absolute nightmare disaster for OEMs to support and the computers they sold it on would have a 99% return rate. Steam OS works because it's a purpose built device. No one is trying to rely on it as an actual computer. Imagine the panic and frustration of your average normie booting up a Linux computer and not being able to run Zoom or Teams or set up their printer. That computer would be going back to the store so fast that Dell and HP wouldn't even be able to sell through the first production run. This is why the "year of the Linux desktop" has never happened and why it never will happen. Even with the "support" from OEMs (shit skins making $0.14/hour over in India providing such "support") it's still a non-starter for your average computer user.

If you're going to run windows 11, run windows 11 LTSC. It's a stripped down no bullshit version that runs faster and cleaner. Linux is a better choice, but Windows LTSC runs pretty good. There is very little other than the OS with this build too.

The way you will know linux is taking over is when those poo tech videos on jewtube change from being in notepad to being in vi. Normies are extremely incapable when it comes to technology. The only reason we pretend normies are capable is because most os changes over the past 25 years have been slightly changing something but keeping it mostly the same. Look at how windows 8 flopped due to an entire ui redesign. Then they stair step it with 10 20h2, 21h2 and 22h2 changes. Doing the same thing now with windows 11 and 24h2. My company kvetched so hard over the new right click menu I had to bake a registry change into gpo to fix right click on login to go back to the old look.
If there were a flavor of linux which was truly a windows clone then maybe it would have a chance. But the closest to windows is still too difficult for a normie to sit down and be able to use it without hand holding. Maybe if linux got big in the late 70s and had buddies at IBM they could have been the top dog but they didn't so they aren't.

win11 is crap. I also intend to use win10 LTSC in the future for the rare times win is better than linux as win10 is really the last decent windows on the same tier as vista.
However, you do realise that after some point win10 will become obsoleted much like XP and win7(to a point) have been? As in programs simply won't run on them.

This is the problem with Linux:

>I want to run X program? Can I?
No. You'll have to find a free alternative that sucks ass that no one uses so you can't even look online to teach yourself how to use it (not that normies do this even with mainstream applications).

>I'm looking for a printer. Can I use it with Linux?
Yeah, probably, but you can't just follow the instructions that came with the printer. You can't even go to the manufacturer website and manually install it. You have to hope and pray that it will show up and just automatically work in Linux otherwise you'll have to open the terminal and get advice from self righteous assholes online who think it's normal to spend 6 hours to set up a printer. If you were using Windows you would be up and running in 5 minutes.

>I have this Zoom/Teams link but it doesn't work!
Tough shit. You're either stuck in the browser or you have to install Windows. Either that or hope that the world adopts ScreenDolphin or whatever retarded free alternative there is in Linux, which will never happen.

>So I spent days researching and found Libre Office or whatever the retarded thing is called but my documents look messed up when I open them!
Too bad. You have to reformat them all. Oh, and don't you dare export the reformatted document to .doc or .docx because when your colleagues go to open your document, it will be scrambled.

>Fuck this shit! I want to buy Microsoft Office!
Too bad. Microsoft Office doesn't work on Linux, and neither does any other normal program except for Chrome and Firefox. I hope you love the terminal because it's time to update your useless applications that no one uses so your computer won't fail to boot the next time you turn it on.

the reality of GNU+Linux is that every month something new is broken and you find that the issue is fixed upstream 3 months later but no new release is ever made so you build your own local version but it breaks every time the distro packages update and 2 years later there are working packages in the wild but now dozens of other things are also totally broken

I switched to Linux Mint last year and have been playing more games on Linux than I did on Windows just due to the ease of installation and for other stuff like FSR, framerate capping and forcing v-sync in games that don't give you the option. Linux is complicated in other areas but vidya is unironically a much more streamlined experience than on Windows now, and with more options overall.

I honestly had trouble making the switch at first but I stuck it out and I'm glad I did. You basically just need to commit to only use Linux for a solid month to force yourself to become familiar with it. Past that point it's like a breath of fresh air compared to Windows where you have no control over anything.

Delusional, 11 performs worse than 10 in almost every metric while offering nothing in return besides having more jeetware, worse UI and a more locked down system, 10 is already bad in that regard, there are processes you're not allowed to terminate and files you're not allowed to access even if you're an admin, basically forcing the idea that you don't own the product you pay for, which is pure cancer. Never installing shitblows 11, sorry, 12 will be even worse in that regard, no doubt some subscription-based AIDS so you'll have to pay monthly just to use your own computer while only being allowed to access what big brother allows you to, windows folder will be completely hidden unless you're a superuser or some shit, just so you couldn't meddle with the preinstalled rootkits that come with it.

only retards like you think that, because you don't understand how software works.

shipping software for linux is hell, linux is a fragmented piece of shit with no respect for backwards compatibility, GNU retards who made the userspace of most linux distros will change the libc or any userspace component without thinking twice, they don't care about breaking your software.

steamOS is welcome, but it's not going to change anything.

>That's by design to keep nonfree cucks like (You) at bay sadly. The method to the madness actually works.

This is absolute grade-a cope.
Even Linus Torvalds agrees with the other commenter's post and Torvalds has been saying it for years:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PmHRSeA2c8&t=283s

Linux is great for servers. It will always be niche for desktop due to its inherent problems. I say that as someone who has used Linux as my main driver for 15 years up until recently (Debian, Arch, Fedora, Gentoo, SUSE, Slackware, their derivatives - I know my way around all of them).
You can embrace reality or reject it. The latter becomes masturbatory after a certain point - it's not that you've embraced something better, but rather that you want to believe you're elite and convince others to use what you use so they can see how elite you are as well.
Accept that people will use what will work and that Linux, as great as it is, has fundamental flaws that will not suit it for all use cases.
