I didn't have to learn swedish despite it being mandatory. I got special permissions to bypass it because in our school system if you just keep saying "No" to the teachers they will give in and let you pass either way.

It's pretty fucking miserable not knowing Finnish, which seems obvious. OP makes it sound like anyone gives a shit about the Swedish language, but I never get any government mail or service in Swedish despite the constitution saying I have a right to it. When I was hospitalized I couldn't speak to any of the personnel in my native language because, well, nobody spoke it. Best I got was English with the younger nurses.

For outsiders, Swedish is mostly spoken in tiny clusters along the coast, in Bothnia and Nyland. Most big cities are majority Finnish, only smaller towns and villages are majority Swedish. Anywhere outside of that, you're best off switching to English.
