When Philip asked him to show them the Father, Jesus says, “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” He is saying to Him is to see God. This is a claim of divine identity, Jesus doesn’t merely represent God, He is God. No prophet or angel ever spoke this way. Only God in the flesh can truthfully say such things.

Saying that Jesus is God leads to tons of contradictions in the Bible. Instead, Jesus and God are of the same "nature", just as you and I are both of the nature "man". This is what John says when he opens his account. Because he establishes that Jesus has in fact existed before coming to earth.
The contradictions you would get, among many others:
- Jesus died, yet if God died all life would die too, since "all sources of life are with God"
- People saw Jesus and lived, yet "no man can see God and live".
- Not to mention that Jesus died, yet how could a mere mortal human harm God. So did God lie? But "God cannot tell a lie". so which one is it?
- Also, again and again, Jesus says "The father is greater than the son", "the son cannot do a single thing out of himself, only what he sees the father do..." and many like that.

Its a gradual process. Those people certainly had good and true aspects of their faith, probably even most of their faith. But the pagan influences started to show already after the apostles died. Of course it was not sudden.
Compare how people can still be partially loyal to God yet to wicked things: The Israelites at times returned to God and repented, but often it is also written "yet they continued to worship on the heights" (instead of only in the temple).
