I do think this is true. The wave of female protagonist characters in the 90s/00s taking the male role in video games/movies/TV did a number on the young boys of the time. We desire to emulate that which we admire, and if your hero is presented as some strong independent woman, that's what you'll emulate. After a while I realized I was doing item hauls more than missions and had to drop the game.
