If there is no spiritual and everything is material, the only rational thing is doing everything for the sake of ruthless survival, best scenario to thrive.
The problem is that there's 99.99% chance you won't be in the top 0.01%
Also, there's no top from which you cannot fall. The reward of ambition is constant fear of losing everything one day.
And even if that won't come to pass, you will die one day anyway and lose everything.

But even all that putting aside, if everyone is in the rat race, who does the job that must be done. People of faith were able to copy a book after a book when books were so expensive only lords could afford them.

Because people of Christian faith believe in the God who rewards your deeds according to what you can do and not according to what you have achieved. If you could copy a book when only that was within your opportunities, you deserve as much honor as a king expanding his nation within his capabilities.

Without faith, only rat race is rational. And rat race won't work for a stable civilization. Stable civilization requires calm minds, and faith allows us to keep calm.

Thus, rational people recognize it is better to have faith than to not have it. Rat races are most likely fruitless, better to be content with doing the good work you can do.
