I've made an upgraded fly zapper using 30,000 V instead of the usual 3-4000 V of the commercial crapiola zappers.
No more stunned houseflies, now they explode. And mosquitoes simply vaporize on contact, and usually the other mosquitoes sense the smell of burnt mosquito flesh and leave me alone, or wait until I'm well asleep before they attack. It's a very good deterrent.

the bug zappers my dad use end up shorting out once three corpses are in there, and the rest just get stunned and crawl around the kitchen counters, attracting spiders & making a mess

It's because of such frustration that I decided to make my own. The commercial ones are based on a single unprotected electrolytic capacitor, it is designed to burn out after a couple of times of use.
