Much better beers out there, including of the same style. But it was a spectacular change of pace in my early 20s back in the early 2000s from the swill we commonly drank.

When I was in Europe I tried all sorts of beer, many of which were billed as IPAs. They were mostly weak, <6% and they were not very hoppy at all. It made me think that Europeans don't really understand the style and what it's supposed to be. Ok, those beers are probably closer to the original recipes from 150 years ago, but there certainly didn't come close to juicy or hazy with hop oils or anything like that. England (obviously) had the best ones, somewhere between the old way and the American way.

Yeah, it really does run counter to what is common in many European beers, which tend towards lagers or maltier bodies.
I was into IPAs for a while when the style was emerging. Burned myself out on them (and actually cut back on drinking quite a bit). I tend to prefer Belgian ales now personally and have for quite a while.
But usually these days when I drink I'm drinking rum or whiskey.

Of course, Belgians are the best beers (for the most part). The IPA category is pretty broad though because there are so many different hops varieties and brewing methods with different grain bills that create many different styles that can all be classified as IPA. A good brewery might offer multiple "IPAs" but (if they're a good brewery) will all be different beers.

Unlike most Irish protestants the Guinness family are actually Irish people who converted rather than just English people who migrated. They were always loyal to the British crown though and Catholics didn't hold any managment poisitons until around the 1960s. The family had to flee Ireland back in 1910s after they donated money to the UVF, a protestent terrorist organisation.

gives me lethal (but very satisfying) farts and shits.
Good for what ails you.
Technically a light beer too.

It's a comment on strength, or it should be.
Guinness was just another brand of stout porter, thanks to Paddy Marketingโ„ข and extreme cost cutting it's basically flavoured and coloured American lager on nitro now. Absolute piss.
You can probably find Black Butte easily enough, that's much closer even though it has the usual problem that non-bulk American beer does of tasting a bit like somebody got some pine floor cleaner in the mash. You can probably tune it out if you're used to that though.

I see you have a pretentious "everything is piss" opinion. But Guinness is better than most mass produced beers.

No it isn't. It's better than the usual piss lager in that it's piss lager with a bunch of added flavouring syrup and nitro makes everything seem better.
