Another big chunk of missing people vanish due to the forces of nature. They get lost in the forest, they get swept away in a flood, the fall through thin ice taking a shortcut across a lake that they thought was frozen solid. More rarely they get preyed upon by a large animal.

If you look at the missing persons cases where they are out in nature and then you look at the underground waterways and where the ground is deceptively deep, you will see a large overlap.

There are a lot of possible outcomes here but I agree it happens weirdly often for the modern world. It's not so easy to just escape the plantation.
Yeah, some people water-suicide or get lost but the numbers game on these disappearances seems to indicate (to me) the existence of some other factor. Maybe that other factor is equally mundane to suicide and poor directional sense but for now there doesnt really seem to be an explanation for it all.

There is this "livingness" in the american forests at night which keeps you perpetually on guard when out there. I've visited forests in Europe (Holland and Germany) and they didnt have the same feeling, despite objectively being g unfamiliar to me and having different scent/flora/fauna to what im accustomed.
It wasn't that they weren't spooky- woods at night is always spooky. It just didnt constantly feel like an apex predator might be in the area.
It's hard to describe.

Well, a couple things.
It is frequently my job to spend time in the forest and I did it a lot in school (biologist. Do a lot of frog work to measure water stuff)
I dont miss out on our forests because of it and I do frequently chill and smoke. I only mean that there is a distinct "feeling in the air" in American forests at night which had never been there in other forests, even European ones which have much more known lore.

Could be that the US forests are a lot more vast and wild than in EU, except some nordic pine forests. Whatever direction you go you can find a settlement or human created object in a day, and the forest itself is usually inhabitated by chill animals like rabbits and deer. Some countries got bears and wolves though, but overall the continent is min maxed, it's been explored thoroughly.
US national parks and deserts are larger than some literal who countries, there is nothing no cell no humans just nature that looks nice by day and spooky by night. You got a lot more potential dangers, harsher climate and terrain, animals or plants that one-tap you, and not even mentioning /x/ tier dangers.
