You can't actually carry it in a pocket unless you have a big jacket with a big breast pocket. Youll need a bag. Only women and homos carry small bags. Men do briefcases, messenger bags, backpacks. These are big enough for a proper laptop 12 inches or bigger. They are superior.

im not sure its worth the hassle and expense desu. for anything you might want to do while traveling a cheap smart phone will do it. i spent years on the road before any of this stuff was around (no smart phones even) so there were times when i had nothing but a cd player (heavy, bad on battries), an mp3 player with 1gb memory (light, great on battery, could get 2x the amount of stuff on converting to WMA format) a 32gb ipod touch (good for almost everything) a dell mini 9 (heavier but fantastic for when staying in one place for an extended period) and then various android smart phones (all at least as useful as the ipod touch though easier to move files on and off).

theres really not much you cant do on a smart phone these days, unless you really really need to plug into something using usb...but even phones can have connecters for that if you look.

Apple doesn't even make their own shit. Their parts come from other companies, mainly Samsung. MacBooks and Mac Pro desktops are utter pieces of over-priced shit. In fact, the only good thing about Apple devices is what is provided by Samsung. You can build your own PC and it will actually be able to do more than the shitty closed-source MacOS ever could. Just goes to show how dumb some of these fucking academic institutions are when it comes to technology. "Oh, it has a shining Apple logo on it, it must be better." Then they realize that most of their proprietary applications won't even work on the fucking thing. Like, okay? You didn't test it before hand? You just thought it would work because it is an Apple device? Not to mention, having to do a refresh every half decade after spending millions on these fucking things. What a waste.

What you're holding in your hand is a piece of failed, outphased techbology of the 2000's like the PDA.

This small thing loses in every metric to a regular-sized laptop. Can you imagine having to do anything real like a PowerPoint or Youtube tutorial in this? What do I need a pocket pc whose' battery lasts 2 hours tops, I have a smartphone and a plugged-in laptop.

What can you even do with that? Are you Simon the magician decoding encrypted mails and wiring transfers in hotels?

That's good. I was just saying that a lot of people will buy an older Dell, HP, or even an intel Macbook, then install Linux. While it will work, it's not ideal. Though, a lot of these high end laptops that have hardware that is supported by Linux are quite pricey.

I was just speaking in general terms. It's better to start with compatible hardware and hardware that isn't going to cause security issues. Otherwise, you could end up pulling your hair out with some distros. They will work, but you will have to do more work and deal with driver problems and things like that.

Depends on the distro, but linux as a whole has a compatible distro for any hardware. It was designed that way and grew through the cracks organically. Its origins were for maximal compatibility for servers and hardware between end devices so different OSs and devices could communicate. Its why it was open sourced, so people could build different things and not have to rely on one ecosystem. Which at this point only apple is still doing.

For me, I would rather buy something with hardware that works with Linux out of the box. If you can afford it, that is the best way to go. Just my take on it. To each their own.

That be cool, but its the opensource communities job to make itself compatable with proprietary devices/hardware, not the other way around. If it secret drivers and shit thats the problem, someone needs to reverse engineer it. I know theres plenty of tools for speculating a binary to source code nowindays, with AI someone needs to make an automated de-obfuscation program for binaries. Then closed source will be done, and companies will have to innovate instead of sucking customers dry through lock in.

Yeah, I worked in an education institution. These asshats seemed to think that anything with an Apple logo was better. Even when you prove to them that Apple devices are not even designed with the enterprise in mind in the first place. Apple gears their market towards BYOD and personal use.

These dumb asses also had to purchase multiple adapters for ever single fucking Macbook we had. Why? Because everything in the classroom setting was still on USB-A. Well, obviously Apple removed USB-A ports, so you only had two USB-C ports. That means a docking station, keyboard, mouse, and compatibility with slide advances. Well, what happens when you plug all of the shit in? The Macbook cannot handle this many devices on a single port and starts overheating, fucking up, and the slide advancer doesn't get enough range from the Macbook. Like I said, it was a shit show. This could have easily been solved with Windows laptops.

>Linux

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

honestly it doesn't really matter for most uses. theres apps for whatever you want to do on a phone - web, torrents, ftp, file transfer, whatever. they are cheap and good on batteries. if you want some tiny little laptop then sure go ahead. for almost every single person traveling or whatever, there will be no functional difference

yeah except one is a combination 360' camera/microphone/tracking device which is always on since it mysteriously takes 3 minutes to boot
laptops aren't necessarily that
Anonymous (ID: UXHUahuk) United States No.22946266 [Report]
if the fucking things didn't artificially take 3 minutes to boot, it would be convenient to turn them completely on and off, but i don't think the companies want you doing that, for advertising/notification reasons if nothing else

im not saying these things cant access cell networks without a simcard but if it was uploading lots of data like video and sound it would be very obvious in terms of battery use. especially if its kept off for extended periods. could every phone be uploading this kind of info constantly? i guess....but whats the point? i bet it can be done to a target if someone wants to listen in bad enough though.

you can monitor all network traffic anyway if you want to. there are ways, especially if you root the device. and if we're getting this concerned then you can't really trust any laptop with a net connection either.

Nah. I can't install a basic terminal or run Linux without root, despite it already running the Linux kernel.

Also other Anon is right they are mega spying devices.

there's no such thing as too much, the fact that we have computers and automobiles and flying machines & shit proves that

then dont have any devices anon. you'll feel better about things perhaps. i'll just keep on using cheap smart phones that can do more than i could have dreamed about 20 years ago and not worry too much about anyone collecting my worthless data through secret cell tower connections that dont need a sim card or for my phone to be turned on.
Anonymous (ID: lms0sBqJ) United States No.22946521 [Report] >>22946533

Yes you can run them, but termux and proot don't work properly without root, so you can't actually run xorg properly.
Anonymous (ID: UXHUahuk) United States No.22946529 [Report] >>22946538

i will too
it's not about your worthless data or my worthless data, just think about the scale of the whole thing
a single cell in a body is worthless the same way your data is worthless
imagine if you had billions of simple little surveillance nodes, and what you could do by centralizing and collating everything they pick up
it's a gay example, but remember in the dark knight when they used all the cellphones in the city to map out environments with echolocation
i know that's not feasible, but similar things could be, like triangulating the source of a sound by the microphones from several nearby phones & their known locations
there's been machine learning crap which can classify a bird call in the middle of a noisy audio stream, that's been around for over six years
all of it could be automated

my point is there is ABSOLUTELY motivation to collect this shit, beyond fucking "gangstalking" or whatever these faggots talk about

sure, i get all that anon. but i just use my cheapo smart phone to read book on, maybe a watch a movie in a tent sometimes. its not on a network, no simcard, off most of the time and when its on im quietly reading cheap fiction for the most part., or in the woods in a tent. i offer nothing. now, if i was somehow in a position to be of interest to people id care a lot more about security because 100% phones can be full compromised with little effort.

at this point, if you only STARTED to be careful once you were in a position of interest, you'd probably be caught easily
we're really naked before power at this point, but everyone is comfortable and the power is lazy & not that centralized, so it's easy not to notice

for travelers those kindles were pretty damn good back then. you could read on the things for many weeks on one charge and in a pinch could snag your emails in places where you cant find internet access computers etc. i met some guys were using them up in the mountains on the border between krgyzstan and china waiting for the damn crossing to open up.

all in one lightweight little package. i went around with an ipod touch 32gb. now that really was a giant leap forward for me in those days, after years of only dreaming about such small and capable computers. with a jailbreak those thigns were almost like a full going laptop.
