Well the LS has over a litre more in displacement. Once you start decreasing displacement but want to maintain power output you have to increase complexity. Less displacement but similar power output requires greater efficiency and lower tolerances.

It’s why the LS can run on 6 cylinders and burn a quart of oil a week and keep chugging but an Audi explodes if it’s running a little rich.

They’re legally required to have less displacement and higher fuel efficiency, so complexity becomes a necessity. Americans aren’t weighed down by those burdens.

It's actually a problem with the newer LS derived motors. The (((government))) forces (((fuel efficiency))) standards and companies create VVT/DoD/AFM all variable valvetrains to reduce fuel consumption. And guess what? Those valve trains ALWAYS fail, it's just a question of when not if. I don't see how this saves fuel in the long run when a brand new truck engine blows up within 20k miles and all the fossil fuels it takes to manufacture, install, deliver etc... The older 5.3 and 5.7s without DoD were basically bulletproof.

I have always had Toyota as my daily driver. Not going to cange that brand either. Never had any problems with them.
A friend of mine had a Tiguan. The one with the fucking TSI engine. He bought it brand new. And I shit you not. Within 100k km, he had TWO engines that went to hell under warranty. When the car reached 120k+ km, the transmission went to hell.
All these jobs would have been over $30k to fix if it wasnt under warranty. And that just show how horrible VAG is.
People can talk as much as they want about "comfort" and "speed" and "driving abilities" etc etc. But I'll rather be that suburbia dad in a Rav4 that gets from A to B than having my car most of the time at a workshop.

And we like to make jokes about american cars and stuff all the time over here, but I can assure you with 110% certainty, that if you want something reliable, and you either have to chose from a european car brand and a US car brand, chose an american car brand any day. Some US models are probably bad also, but in average US cars are way better than European ones. Thats a fact.

The guy we rent boats and jetskis has one and he had to take it in for warranty work immediately after buying because there was something wrong with the motor. Everything on the SBC derived families are good motors when you have actually worked on them. 400 sbc is probably one of my favorite I have ever dealt with. The ease and robustness of it. Vortec, despite its shortcomings, was a good solid repairable and reliable motor to work on all things considered. LS1 and LS2 and LS3 and LQ4 were all fantastic motors imho. In fact I'd say the best family of motors ever made is the sbc family.
