Silver lining is I got a good head start to try a little bit of everything, left my job last year to start my own research firm in public policy using data science, just do what you like and figure a way out to make money off to it - work matters more than credentials (unless there is some legal obligation like being a doctor)

Well, across the fields I saw some key things people did being successfully self driven and all

>Started a business
>doesn't have to have any actual clients, just as base of operations to keep efforts focused
>Volunteer in pubic facing work
>Kept a portfolio of the former
>Network and host networking events

Last one is key, everyone knows it's ass, but its how you get work, letters of recommendation, involved in niche projects, exposed to new opportunities, find out your mistakes, etc.
