What experiences and memories have you had throughout your life that led to your neurons to develop in such a way that in this moment in time and space you have decided to communicate this worldview to the world at large?
Free will as we think about it becomes free the very moment you decide to accept it for what it is.
Nihilism is not meant to be bleak. If nothing matters, then what is stopping you from becoming the being you always wanted to be.
You speak of a sea of darkness, and deep within yourself you fear it. The unknown. It is written in your DNA that you are to be terrified of non-existence. That is the thought that pushes you forward but it is also the thought that keeps you down.
Throw away the shackles, throw away the worries and fears that bind you to the material plane.
You are the universe trying to understand itself. Grab that thought and follow it throughout your conscious life. And then become hyper aware of everything. It is overwhelming, yes. The very source of depression and fear and anxiety.
You were born in warmth. Just as each and every particle was born that very same way.
And from this you have bloomed into the conscious observer and actor which you are now.
Sitting in front of your PC, thinking the thought you had by reading what I have written above. Just two brains interacting with each other. The beauty of the baud. Basking in the glow of LEDs.
Become aware and then turn this awarness into beauty.
Grasp the suffering and pain. That which has made you but should never define you.
The more complex we become, the more our ability to change everything will be.
Don't drown in the sea of darkness, build yourself an unsinkable boat. And then, become the unsinkable boat itself. And finally go on to become the sea. Then you become the wind and the gravitational waves. The massless photon.
