Do you want a real answer? The real answer is getting started and having the conviction to stick with the routine. That sounds like a gay cookie-cutter answer but let me explain it in detail and in an anti-gatekeeping way. When I first started, I was very fat (287.5 lbs) and I forced myself to run for an hour 5-6 times a week without excuse. When I say "run" I mean I was slow as hell, had to stop after 10-15 minutes, and was exhausted after going up a hill. But I forced myself to keep moving no matter what, even if my pace was slower than a fit person's walking pace. Within two weeks I already noticed massive improvements in my pace and the lbs starting to melt off. Once you can maintain this routine for the critical period of 2-3 weeks then you will find yourself automatically following it (plus you'll be more motivated to keep it up once you see your weight falling).

If you're not seeking to lose weight and just want to get to a good running level, then the only answer is to keep running regularly and gradually increasing your distance and pace. On "good days" try to up your pace a bit or go a little farther. Be careful not to overtrain. If you're really serious then you should do interval training, but I was never a fan of that (I much prefer running up hills which will force you to improve very quickly).

>>23052211
Hiking is based as hell. The only problem is it's time-consuming so I can only do it once in a while. Also requires some planning.

Mountain bikers are cunts who fuck up my woodland trails and get in my way while I'm jogging up hills (past your huffing and puffing ass). It's funny how so many of you are out of shape (because a lot of you just take cars to the top) and act like you're hard anyways. In reality, you're just scared of running because you fear the grind.

Anons reading this, nothing is better for endurance and fitness than running. Don't let angry faggots like this guy try to gaslight you into doing an inferior sport with faggy bells and whistles (MUH bIkE cHaiNS, mUh spECIaL WhEeLS) just to waste time that could be spent feeling the burn on the road.

Hiking is way better than walking because you are going up and down hills and also spending considerable energy maintaining balance and navigating harsh terrain (which massively strengthens your core in a *functional* way). If you regularly hike you will be in good shape no matter what. Plus being out in nature is good for your soul.

Careful running with all that mass. I'm 6'2 and at my fittest was about 220lbs and 15% bf but all my mass is entirely "top heavy" and my knees are fucking obliterated from playing rugby.

I have genuinely tiny lower legs though, (30" inseam and my ankle girth is nearly as small as my wrists) so it might not be as bad for others. I got up to about 260lbs at 25% bf but all my mass (even the fat) was concentrated in my upper body even though I did a /fit/ meme routine (that supposedly turns you trex mode). My knees just couldn't support the impact, strangely "low impact" jogging is worse than proper running or sprinting.

I lost a tonne of weight from being very sick and my legs have fucking atrophied like a wheelchair user but I somehow kept most of my upper body mass, now I can't run long enough to even "stress" myself cardio wise.

I'd recommend you take some days off for your joints, and replace it with cycling for cardio, and weights for load bearing.
Anonymous Ireland No.23052283
>>23052239
I have a thickened heart from low volume maximum intensity (i.e. only training extreme heavy weights and never doing any light cardio - which helps elasticity). This type of modelling is pretty rare I think but it can happen. There's no other electrical or mechanical problems but my blood pressure is basically "stuck" at 130/85 (though I've managed to get it down to 125/80) so although that doesn't seem so bad it's basically guaranteed to cause chronic problems.

I weigh 210 now (also 6'2) and my legs are like tree trunks. So I don't have issues with knees (but I also don't play impact sports like rugby). I take days off now. I either do nothing, swim or do bodyweight exercises on days off. What I was recommending to anon was how to get started (which requires running almost every day - since the pace is so slow when you first start, overtraining is not really a problem).

Imagine you are driving. There's a rise coming up. If you accelerate now, while you're on the flat, you'll go up that rise faster and maintain speed further into the slope. However if you try to accelerate after you hit the slope, you'll use more energy just maintaining the speed you already have, and if your car is overloaded or underpowered, you'll slow down to a crawl.

This analogy is about becoming fit before or during your 30s, rather than trying to get fit once that hill starts getting steeper.
