The way it's supposed to be is just forage, hunt farm for food, get married, have children, that's pretty much it
All other species live just fine this way, but who knows for sure if they're happy about it, or have the ability to be happy/unhappy about it

i think the defining characteristic of people vs animals, is the ability to be aware that things COULD be better
there's permanent residents of mental wards who have fairly trivial issues, but they lack self-awareness & don't even want to live better, even though they could
those people may as well be animals

so it seems like imagination is an important component, and so is curiosity & the desire for novelty, to break from routine and take chances

when you put those two components together, you get a creature who acts in the world such that their environment becomes more hospitable, which fosters better imagination and more freetime, which leads to a faster rate of improvement
then you get renaissance/enlightenment/society or whatever

i wonder if the point of critical mass of consciousness could be identified
it would depend on how inhospitable the starting environment is
i wonder if you could create a unit system for that..

>renaissance/enlightenment
Both of these things were a sham
They still had public executions and most of the world lived in despair still

maybe but you get the point
i was describing a feedback loop which leads to that sort of thing
i wasn't trying to say enlightenment/renaissance lived up to their names, but those names are descriptions of what it was
