oh, you want to use trails only? i never did that though im sure there are some you could use. spent a lot of time on interstates and it was fine. most of them have really nice wide shoulders to ride on. the only one that wasnt good was Interstate 10 going east out of LA. but that was a few years back and it might have been fixed now. better to dro south and use I8. thats a really nice ride over the Phoenix.

anyway, if you want any advice or ideas i'll stick around while the thread stays open

Here in wisconsin, there are very few wilderness camping places. As in, you just pitch a tent anywhere, start a fire, and chill. Most places have designated campsites, that dont allow fire at all. There are trails that go through the entire state of wisconsin. They have some paved/gravel trails, but majority are hiking trails up rocky hills and what not, some require a canoe or boat. Be wary of north side of milwaukee, probably most dangerous place in WI.

the worst bit about traveling with a bike is when you have to box them up for a flight. always hated doing that crap lol. boats are nicer if you can find one and afford the cost, but theres less and less of that.

You are aware we have niggers here, right? If you start your journey in a major city your bike will get stolen in less than 24 hours and you'll likely get raped and beaten to death trying to free camp.

If you stick to rural areas you'll piss off the locals as there are no bike-lanes, but otherwise you should be safe. But if you have any trouble, you are a long way from help. Though most white drivers might still lend a hand. Choose your touring area wisely, research demographics and crime stats. Then start measuring the actual distance between your stops, America is bigger than you think and a lot of it is undeveloped. One more thing, check for temperature/weather conditions for the time of year you intend to be in that area. Prepare accordingly.

The USA is huge. Just look at google maps and get an idea of how large it is.

Don't think you're going to bicycle from California to New York on a 2-week vacation.

Also, the climate varies wildly. You do not want to be bicycling in Arizona in the summertime.

its easier than you think. ive never paid for camping anywhere in north america. you just have to practice the old tactic of 'arrive late, leave early' and keep out of sight. even camped in death valley, yellowstone park, arches, rocky mountain park and glacier too. spend several days camping by a big lake up there. that was nice. just keep out of sight and you'll be fine. same for camping by the road etc.

i generally try to avoid them completely unless absolutely necessary. a few cities are worth visiting for a bit to see stuff but most of the time you can just skip them. thankfully you'll find a lidl or intermarche etc near little village etc all through europe and over here there are the big stores just by highways etc.

oh yeah its fine. great really. you know theres going to be a walmart or whatever regularly along the interstates, gas stations everywhere etc. depending on your route you just carry 5-6 days of food or whatever just to be sure. no big deal. at least i did it like that. where your route is will have more stores along it than routes out west just because its busier over east.

bears are the usual thing you have to watch for when camping in lots of places in north america. we used to just carry a bit of rope and a bag to put food and stuff in. you just throw the rope over a branch a ways up a tree and haul that bag up there so the bear doesn't come in your tent. never had a problem like that. carrying a bear spray is a good idea too, and they make a decent weapon in general.

for touring a hard fork is probably better. when you're carrying weight on the front its just stronger if you dont have the suspension i think. if things get a bit rough for a while you just reduce tires pressures a bit and slow down. going too fast on bad ground has cost me a front luggage rack and a week of waiting for a new one to arrive, and that was in a place with a store and mail. if in doub, slow down.

another tip for traveling bikes is to have 35 spoke wheels front and back. they are the strongest. and, if you have some problem with the back wheel, you can always take a couple spokes from the front to fix the back. front wheels have a very easy life and can spare a few spokes
Anonymous (ID: SJWL6uLE) Canada No.23123495
not 35...36, obviously. 36 spoke rims. always.

Also, biking from Chicago into northern Indiana is a good way to get shipped home in a pine box. Google "Gary, Indiana" or "Calumet City" to understand why.

There are places to bike that are nice and avoid major cities, but the Rust Belt has too many dicey areas for someone who doesn't know their way around.

Consider biking the Cascades. Fairly cool in the Summer and also fairly safe. Plenty of places to camp as well.

Yeah, but OP doesn't know how to find those places. He'll be biking and suddenly find himself in East Saint Louis getting his hubcaps stolen.

nah, Merca is actually a really cool country to bike around in. unless you're being a complete asshole the cops wont hassle you at all. if you ever got caught camping some place (never happened to me) they are more likely to help you out instead of screwing you over.

staying away from busy places is a good idea in general no matter where you are. for example, ive ridden a bike across France six or seven times and never even got very close to one of the big cities. i just wouldn't go near big cities without having a very good reason.
