Supermarket tomato breeds are cultivated for their shelf-life not taste, in addition they are picked before they are ripe and are then later ripened using gas.
Home grown breed of tomato that's been allowed to ripen on the vine is much more flavourful.
Canned tomatoes are also a better option than out of season fresh tomatoes from the supermarket.
