Reverse is never just a simple left and forward, that's always 1st.
I think that was your concern?

When it's depicted like >>23159048 there is always something else you have to do like pushing down on the stick or pulling a tab under the knob.
The exact procedure depends on the brand but they always make sure reverse and 1st are very distinct.

You might mix up 6th and reverse, but that's not a big issue in practice because the engine will stall if you try to drive off in 6th thinking it's reverse, and you can't even engage reverse when the car is moving so if you accidentally go from 5th to reverse you might hear some scary noises but that's it.

>and you can't even engage reverse when the car is moving so if you accidentally go from 5th to reverse you might hear some scary noises but that's it.
I had a Jeep Wrangler with a 6 speed and reverse was to the right and down. There was nothing stopping you from going from 5th to reverse and it was a common issue. You couldn't actually get it into the reverse gear, but completely removing teeth from part of the mechanism was common. That was even a Daimler transmission left over from Mercedes as I recall, so there's nothing American car manufacturers can't fuck up.

I honestly agree. 99% of people don't require the fine control of manual transmission. I truly think automatic transmission reduces the entry barrier and frees women's minds from technical details, hopefully towards watching where they are going more carefully.

Outdated opinion, automatic transmissions are far more reliable than expecting some gopnik to properly shift gears without fucking up the transmission. The only time you should ever be manually controlling gears at this point is when hauling heavy loads and since Europeans don't own shit they never have this issue.
