I think it's all a matter of balance. Plato wrote his works in the form of dialogues: Gorgias start with Socrates and Gorgias talking, Symposium's setting is in the middle of a party, and dialectic occurs when ideas are clashing against each others. Rousseau associates the development of the feelings with social settings, esp. the primitive parties and we all know the importance of the feelings to the modern art. And finally, in today's academia, at least in the brazilian ones, networking seems to be important for academic success, and discussing the lectures with colleagues seems to be important for expanding their knowledge and scope of in general. When one's scope is all about himself, it tends to be too narrow. In conclusion, I think that balance is the key and that socializing isn't all that bad depending on the person.
