am I just biased or is "don't stay together just for the kids" incredibly backwards and selfish advice for anyone that isn't a shitskin that impregnated some whore during a one night stand? Bringing such a complicated life form into the world that needs a present mother and father figure is delicate work and getting a divorce because you are both too weak to admit you need therapy is pretty pathetic as far as I can tell when the stakes are "maladjusted, miserable child" or "happy child"

I can't imagine this is a very unpopular opinion but whatever

the thing is, if a couple is at the point of either:
- get a divorce
- stay together only for the kids
then the kids are rarely going to turn out happy and well-adjusted
but yeah, it seems like kids tend to turn out better when the parents stay divorced
kids with miserable parents often wish their parents had separated later in life, even if it was for their sake

this is often true i would guess
maybe some unhappy couples could actually resolve their problems that way, get the secret 3rd good ending, and certainly they should if there's a kid involved

my parents never presented as miserable in each others company at all, their separation was very vague and though they expressed that they were going to "take some time apart" they never said the word "divorce" to me but here we are years later and they're both living in their own small miserable houses by themselves. I do miss the sense of security and a 'home to go back to'. Talking even more about how I feel about this personally would be blog-posty but I think the point stands.

ah
sorry anon
my parents were a fucking nightmare, abused each other for awhile, then did drugs in the woods, and now they're still together & i still live with them
i love them & they both have good intentions, i just don't want to do it anymore or be involved
